I accept ii different applications; one where the filter mounts with the filter hanging underneath (automotive), the other with the filter sitting on top of the mount (boat). Is having an anti-drainback valve in the filter a adept/bad thought in either or both of these applications?

I ask considering I've used both and see some pro's con'southward to both. For the filter hanging down I can't see that it would be helpful as the filter doesn't bleed at shutdown. Information technology does make it more hard to poke a hole in the filter to drain it before removal....so a con in that application. For the filter on top of the mount I could meet the valve every bit an advantage since it keeps the oil from running out of the filter (in my listen, reducing the "dry start" aspect), but again information technology makes it more difficult to drain the filter before removal.

Looking for a sanity cheque here as well as any real world anecdotal testify you might have.

Re: Oil Filters - Are anti drainback valves a good thing?

Howdy,

Any filter application that has the filter upright, ordinarily doesn't crave an anti-bleed back valve.

Filters that are mounted horizontally or upside down, usually always require it because it the filter has to be filled each start, increasing the amount of time with NO oil pressure level immediately after start.

Y'all should utilise the "correct" filter for the engine.

Rick

Re: Oil Filters - Are anti drainback valves a expert affair?

My dilemma is that the "correct" filter (at least from what I can observe) comes in both flavors; with and without the valve. Only depends on what brand you lot're buying.

Lately I've been using an Amsoil Oea(?)24 filter in both applications and it has the valve, only other brands (including Mercruiser) don't take the valve. I'm shying abroad from the "manufacturing plant" Merc filter because it's so much smaller, and there'southward plenty of room for a much larger filter....larger even than what I'grand using. I'one thousand likewise shying abroad from Fram due to some of the other brands being of obviously better quality, even though I've used Fram in automotive applications for many years with no problems.

I figured this would exist a good twist on an oil thread.

Hey! We can disagree sometimes!!!;)

All kidd'due north aside though, here's a great article on filters.....the important part is at the stop of the article where they bespeak that at that place's simply a "few" actual filter manufacturers out there in radio land!!

My dilemma is that the "right" filter (at to the lowest degree from what I tin can discover) comes in both flavors; with and without the valve. But depends on what brand you're ownership.

no dilemma there... it won't injure to have information technology, information technology won't hurt if yous don't accept it
